The Cycling Experience (2002)

Audience: All bicyclists, all levels, from teens on up

Length: 1 hour, 20 minutes

Contents: Overview of everything you ever wanted to know about biking.

Strengths: Entertaining, informative, high production quality.

Weaknesses: No major weakness.

Discussion: This video is great, probably the best comprehensive overview of bicycling available. Pro cyclists take you on a tour of bicycling in a straightforward, succinct fashion. They cover all the basics (safety, bike maintenance, fitness, etc.) as well as advanced tips and techniques (different kinds of valves, effective ways to brake, how to do a bunny hop, etc.). The presentation is light and fresh; the production is very professional.

Everyone, even experienced riders, is sure to learn something from watching this video. For example, it explains that the soles of bike shoes are stiff to better transfer power to the pedal. It also suggests putting baby powder in your tire before putting in an inner tube in order to reduce friction.

The only quibble with this DVD is that it endorses a few products along the way, but that is done relatively unobtrusively.

Finally, The Cycling Experience inspires the viewer to ride by showing how fun, healthy and stirring biking can be. Bonus materials include great action and crash scenes.
